what about your radiator cap? replace that and make sure the coolant is flowing out of the radiator into the resivour or it may be clogged then you have to change the radiator

First, make sure it really is overheating....it could be a faulty sending unit/switch. Take a kitchen type thermometer and place in the radiator opening where the cap usually goes and start the engine. Keep an eye on the temp gauge in the car and check the thermometer once the engine has warmed up for five to ten minutes....normally, it should be around 195-200 degrees for a warm engine. If it reads around this temp, I would replace the temp sensor. Also, make sure your cooling fans are coming on if it gets higher than this....they can cause an over heating problem too.
Otherwise, you should have a mechanic run a pressure test on the cooling system...will tell you if you have a head gasket leak. Could also be a plugged up radiator...have you had the system flushed at all? Could be a missing air dam below the bumper....will cause insufficient air flow through radiator.
Just a few idea's for you, Paul

Over heating can be caused by a number of things.. so you replaced the thermostat and did it properly.. next you should check the simple things first..start it up and raise the hood.. as it begins to warm up.. watch the hoses and see if any of them collapse.. old hoses will sometimes do that.. and it resticts the flow of coolant.. next check to see if your fan is kicking on.. some of the older modles have a fan clutch.. if the fan clutch is bad.. the fan will only turn slowly.. if the fan is working properly, next check to see if you have any water being expelled from your exhaust pipe.. if there is water dripping from the tail pipe.. you have a busted head gasket... while your car is warming up.. remove the radiator cap..( do it while it is cold) and observe to see that the thermostat is openning properly and letting the coolant circulate.. if it is circulating and no water is spitting out your tail pipe.. it is either the restriction or the fan.. I am betting on the fan... also check for leaks and remember.. even though the temperature gage is showing hot.. make sure that the engine is actually overheating.. your temperature sending unit could be bad.. Check all those things.. if you are not loosing coolant.. I still bet on the fan.. good luck.. P S .. some radiator caps have a pressure release on them.. it could be bad also..

Are losing coolant? If so, then that would explain the overheating. The leak could be several places, water pump, hoses, radiator, heater core, intake manifold gasket, head gasket, and a few other places.
Take the car in and have it checked out and see what the problem is and go from there.

3.1 or 3.4? these two engines can be bothersome when
breaking into the cooling system. they have a dirty habit of
having air pockets and not releasing them. there are two blead screws. one on the t-stat cover that the upper hose attaches to. and one on the coolant bypass pipe on the the left side of the engine. be careful with em, theyre brass and will brake. warm up the engine and shut off and open these two blead valves, several times may be required.
the 3.8 litre has one too on the t stat cover but this engine is not as prone to this problem, not saying it cant happen.
if problem persists i would take it to a dealer for proper diagnosis.
have you also checked to make sure the cooling fans are
turning on? i would be sure and check that too.

Try flushing the cooling system, get a good engine coolant system flush kit,and give it the works,if that don't work then try a new recondition radiator,or the water pump may be shot. Oh! check the inside of all the hose's they maybe collapsing on you.

If your car has a 3.4L engine it is likely a head gasket or an intake gasket. If it is, it is quite expensive to fix

Start by scanning the stored trouble codes in the computer. That why the light is there, to alert you to a possible problem. That would be your start point.

could be any number of things. water pump, radiator, hose, in-take gaskets. blown head gaskets are costly to repair and your mechanic may find other needed repairs upon tear down.
