Welcome to the hobby!

If you have it in a bowl with no filter, change all of the water in the bowl every 2-3 days.
If it's in a tank with a filter, change 25% of the water once a week.

Either way, keep the temperature reasonably warm (70F minimum)

Feed your betta a good flake or pellet food as a staple, but be sure to supplement his diet with things like bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia every few days. All of those things are available frozen or freeze dried at any decent pet shop.
Feed him only as much as he can eat in 3-4 minutes and remove leftovers. That's especially important in a bowl. You can feed him once or twice a day, both work well.

The key to success is not over feeding, keeping him warm and keeping his water clean. Do that and you can expect several years from your new pet.

Best of luck and enjoy your new fish

Rather than a ornament I advocate getting a plant. Bettas love to have a situation to cover and sleep beneath and the leaves of a plant are best for this. You're going to desire to get a small clear out as good to hold the tank cleanser and oxygenated. Also get a pH experiment package and experiment your water earlier than getting the fish, that manner you are going to understand should you have to get a product to elevate or shrink the pH of your tank. I advocate Hikkari betta pellets as meals, they are beautiful low priced and of beautiful well excellent.

-dont put any other bettas in the same tank, they'll kill each other
-keep in either warm or cold water
-feed once or twice a day, if twice dont feed lots
-let him be able to swim a litte, they grow in small cups they're whole life, you'd expect they'd wanna swim a little before they die!!!
