They had a litter of 10 pups. This morning she was fine...now she seems to be flipping out! She's jumping all around trying to climb out of her tank. I separated the male earlier, as I read somewhere he shouldn't be kept near the pups...should I put him back?? Anyone with info...please help!!

There's a reason for keeping Syrians separate and it so they don't injure or kill one another. They are solitary creatures that should never housed together. You will need to keep them separated from now on for each ones safety. A male will eat the babies too. I hope you have homes for all those babies and don't think a pet store will take in all of them, they have their own suppliers. Some time ago my girls hamsters were left along for a few minutes (they didn't think things could happen so quick) and we ended up with all the babies to keep. Pet store said no, I don't trust strangers with the proper care of animals without first checking them out and people aren't willing to have a home visit just for a hamster. But this has been my rules for many years on any breed of animal to be adopted out (I used to breed cats at one time). I no longer breed them either and got all my cats fixed.

As for mom flipping out, leave her alone except for food and water. Don't even change the litter either. Mom will eat some or all the babies if she feels overwhelmed or their sick. This is even more true of a first time mom. Now around 13-16 days old their eyes will open and you can change the litter at that time and begin to handle them. Now mom may be opposed to this so wait a bit more if she is aggressive.

I given you 2 specific links on breeding and raising the pups. The third is the site home page with links to even more information on hamsters.

No, you should not put the male back in there. The male is seperated because he will eat the young pups. Make sure you have plenty of food an water in the mom's house and also make sure that she is in a room that has alot of noise. There isn't really much else you can do if she is in the proper environment. She may just be nervous. Don't touch the babies, because she may reject them if they have your smell on them, also try not to handle her, as that could irritate her. If she gets too scared, she may start eating her babies, which sadly there is nothing you can do even then. Just keep her in a very quiet place.

Are you disturbing her and her babies? That is why she is flipping out. You counted her babies and took out the male. Leave the male out and leave her and her babies alone. For AT LEAST 7 days. At 7-10 days the babies will begin to eat solid food and that is a better time to disturb the new family.

NO! DO NOT put the male back. The mama will only eat the babies. More information on pregnant and new mama hamsters....

Keep the mother and the father away from the babies or else they'll eat them. That means you have to watch the babies carefully and tend to their needs.

If she doesn't settle down, I would just get her checked out.
