I'm watching a show on TLC tonight about a family who had twins and then 6 babies. They said selective reduction was out of the question. They are so lucky the babies are healthy with only some developmental issues. I feel that is reckless on the part of the medical professionals involved to allow a women to carry this number on babies to term. Couples should be required to agree to selective reduction before they start this process. There should be a cap on the number of fetuses. What is your opinion?

My concern is the health of the mother and the babies.

I disagree. It is a personal choice to be made by the parents after they have been told of the risks. You can't make someone do selective reduction, or have an abortion or have their tubes tied. I do however think that a doctor has the right to refuse to have a woman as a patient if the woman refuses to do selective reduction. Let her find a doctor who has experience in multiple births and who will treat her no matter what.

There should not be a cap. They know it is a possible when they do the IVF. However know body plans for six. It happen when the embryo splits and that is beyond any ones control. Most doctors only put in 3 or less embryos. Must are just lucky to get one. But sometimes they all split and you get 6. But when you wait so long for a child you take what ever is given to you. How can you choose which child you want or don't want. How can you raise 4 or so knowing that there should be 6. How do you explain to them that there would be more but we decided we did not want all 6 so we got rid of 2 and you were the luck ones left.

I am going to do IVF and I am getting 3 embryos back and if end up with six children then so be it. I will carry the six and hope for the best for all of us. Unfortunately this is something that a lot of women have to do to have a child. I know I am glad that this is out there because without it I might never be able to be a mom. If we end up with more then one we will be that many more times blessed.

Too all women who have to go though wish you the best and many good hopes. God Bless.

I think its a very personal choice. I had twins that were a really rare type and odds were 50/50 that they would not be stillborn. I could have selectivly reduced to make it safer for one. They had no membrane in between and same placenta due to the no membrane their cords could tangle and they could lose oxygen and die. I chose NOT to selectively reduce and now one of the has severe brain damage and has a tracheostomy and ventilator to breath with, severe Cerebral Palsy and other issues. I am still happy I made the choice that I did because despite her diffrences she is my daughter and she leads a quality life even though she is "diffrent".

As for letting woman carry as many babies as 5 or 6 I dont think its reckless on the medical peoples part at all, they transplant more eggs because many of them do not make it when you do IVF. They dont know how many will take or not take. What about woman who have that many with no drugs involved? It does happen and in that situation its not the medical professionals doing at all.

Each to their own I guess

I feel just the opposite! I feel that they should have to sign saying they will not have a reduction. When you enter into something like IVF you know the risks, you know you could walk away with 6. What's reckless is doctors putting back multiple eggs!!!! It's just crazy that anyone would go through all the work of IVF just to "terminate" their children!
I'm with the couple on TLC - It's out of the question!!

I think it's the couples choice. They should be able to say how many of their genetic children they can carry. All the doctors can do is advise and tell the options for this, they can't require a woman to have selective reduction.. that's why it's called selective! Sorry, but I totally don't agree with you. After going through infertility issues myself, and having to make decisions like this, I can say from personal experience that unless you have been through these problems, you can't say what you would do. Yes, it would put the mother and babies lives at risk, but that's for the couple to decide.

Selective reduction is just an abortion with a longer name and with suppossed better "reasoning". It it wrong. the health professionals should think about the possibility of women getting pregnant with litters before they use all these drugs to make it happen that way. If you get pregnant with 6 then you should carry 6. The family knew what they were siging up for when they started this process.

It is the choice of the parents. The women is the one having to carry the children. And if all the babies are healthy, then why abort? There is no reason too. It takes a special type of person to raise that many children, and I think that if they can handle it, then good for them. But it should be the choice of the parents whether or not to carry that many children. If it's not harmful to the mother or babies, then I can't see any reason for termination. And NO ONE should be made to kill their children!

As you watch the show, please ask yourself which one of this couple's children you would have liked to see not be born due to "selective reduction." Which ones shouldn't have been given the opportunity to experience life outside of the womb? Will YOU choose? Then why should the doctors?

If we use technology to help women become pregnant, then it is our responsibility to use technology to help them carry the pregnancies to term; NOT to force them into aborting the children.
