If your old filter cartridge has been out of the tank for more than about 8-10 hours, most all of the bacteria you want will be dead and would really only add to your problem and as Pee Tee pointed out, after 24 hours it will all be dead. If it's been less than that and the cartridge is still wet go ahead and use it.

Your best plan at this point is serious water changes to control the ammonia until the bacteria is up to speed. There is some in the tank and it will multiply very quickly, so you should be back to ok within a few days to a week. Sorry to hear of your loses, that always hurts.

If I can help any further please feel free to drop me an email.

Did your all fish die in a narrower range of time or was the mortality gradual? If the former is true, then it might be due to abiotic factors such as temp, o2 level, pH, NH3. It might be bacterial infection if the latter is true. I reckon its more Ph and low dissolved 02 for the mortality.

have you checked your ph?
and check your nitrate lvl's to.

(if your ph is out cichlids are very sensitive to low ph.)

did you wash the new filter out befor setting it up on your new tank?

any try not to use any type of soap beacue that could kill your fish as well.

the only other thing i can think of is are any of your fish, showing any type's of disease's?

you shouldn't have to put the old filter pad back in,
there should be enough good bacteria in the tank.

It is worth a try what have you got to loose you already lost most of the fish. It will help restablish the tanks cycle.
