no (4x+2)(x-1) = 4x^2-2x -2

4x^2 + 7x -2 = (4x-1)(x+2)

Therefore x=1/4,-2
Hope that helps! =)

No, that isn't right.

4x^2 + 7x - 2 = 0
(4x - 1)(x + 2)

Good try, but that would give you 4x^2 - 2x - 2.

If you start with (4x )(x )
Then you would have to find numbers to put in there that would FOIL out to give you your original problem:
(4x-1)(x+2)

4x² + 7x -2 = 0

Factorize into (4x + a)(x + b)
so that 4b+a = 7 and ab = -2.

a = -1, b = 2

(4x -1)(x + 2) = 0
x = 1/4 or x = -2

You can also use the quadratic formula. For a quadratic equation
Ax² + Bx + C = 0
the quadratic formula is:
x = [ -B ± √(B² - 4AC) ] / [2A].

4x^2 + 7x -2 = 0
x^2 + 7/4x -2/4 = 0

(x+2)(x-1/4)=0

x1=-2
x2=1/4

No, when you multiply that back out, you get 4x^2-2x-2.

Try adding a number to both sides of your equation to make the problem easier to break up?
