I see many car commercials calling the car a 'crossover' but I don't know what that means.

A cross over is part everything. It seats more people comfortably, rides smooth but has AWD (ideally) and has good cargo room. Usually equipped with a powerful engine. Nissan Murano is a good example.

It's an SUV body based on a car's sub frame. For the most part.
