I wouldn't try to add any substrate to a tank with water in it, that will just make a major mess in the tank and the filter. personally, I have found that using liquid fertilizers works just as well for the vast majority of plants and is much easier to deal with.

I guess you already know it's going to be messy, attempting to do what you plan to do :)

I use JBL base fert/substrate. But I am sure most subtrate from reputable company are just as good.

The only way I can think of is for you to get a long PVC tube and shaft it into the gravel and try to pour the subtrate into the tube so that it drop to the end in the gravel. Then you will need a rod of slightly thinner diameter with respect to the inner dia of the PVC tube, shaft the rod into the tube to push/force the substrate out the other end underneath the gravel. It's the only way I know how, but it's still going to get very messy. :)

Good Luck.

about six months ago i decided to do just what you wanted to do, put more laterite in my tank,
it already had 25lbs i just needed a litte more to make it thicker so i could root more plants, i also have 5lbs of crush coral to keep the pH from going too crazy its a discus tank and i like to use strait RO

soooo, being the 20 year veterin hobbyist i am, i rinsed and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed and dumped another 10lbs in the tank and hoped in a few hours everyuthing would be fine

LOLOLOL
a week later the entire tank looked like nyc after 911, dust covered everything, i had to cyphon the dust off of everything thank god not a fish died, but i think i was just lucky there

dont do it, use the fertilizer its easy and cheap

Look up Laterite Clays. That's a popular substrate for planted tanks. The bad news is that it goes in first. There's no way to do what you're thinking.

GEO liquid seems to work best (for plant's)

No, you can keep your fish in the tank with it,
best place to buy it from, would be a petshop or even
ebay.
