Many times people type fast and just hit the wrong buttons and then post without checking. It doesn't mean they are stupid. It just means they are impatient and/or could care less if a word is misspelled. Many people come on here and try to post from non-English speaking countries. They make mistakes and that's expected. I can't even imagine trying to go to a Chinese Q and A board and trying to type so someone could understand me. Spelling alone is never an indicator of ones intelligence. Many of the greatest thinkers, artists, musicians and inventors of the last 500 - 600 years were sometimes illiterate when it came to reading. Be patient.... the person writing may be doing the best they can.

Glad to see I'm not the only one irked by this. I attempt (though I probably fail horribly) to use proper grammar when writing these replies, even if it matters to no one but myself. Spelling is easy enough to correct on a computer that nobody has any excuse for poor spelling. I particularly dislike the current trend of replacing words with single letters or, worse yet, numbers. I wish the fad would pass... (at least I hope it's a fad.)

Because a large sub-culture decided they didn't care about it. Now, bit by bit, they're finding that they have trouble getting jobs and communicating with their co-workers. They can't handle written correspondence with customers, *especially* foreign customers who have learned correct English.
Also, in the classes I teach, they're losing about a letter grade in each class because of the lack of communication skills. Since they can't make themselves understood clearly in the written word, they're handicapped in their business dealings. They may have great, snappy interpersonal skills -- and many of them manage excellent, useful careers as enterprenuers and in service positions.
As with any basic skill, lack of that skill deletes a large segment of the employment market from their available choices.
I see the same problem with basic math skills: perhaps one in ten cashiers with whom I deal is capable of computing and counting back change. The rest punch the numbers into the register and hand back whatever it says. If they enter the data incorrectly, they don't notice -- they aren't fluent with the cross-checking skills. In a couple of cases, I've pointed out the problem, and they've been at a loss as to how to respond -- how can the customer say that the computer is wrong? I've even had some funny looks when I give them more than just pennies, making the amount of my change a multiple of 25 cents. They don't understand what I'm doing until the register shows the change as $1.75 -- and then they think it's some cool trick.
Sigh. Have you ever read the science fiction short story "Feeling of Power?" It's about a janitor who figures out how to multiply ... without using his pocket calculator.

Because people are stupid, or lazy, but I go for stupid.
(it says Check Spelling and it has a little check next to it, and it's to the upper right of the answer box-good luck finding it)

it's called TAKS testing. nowadays, Your kid's are supposed to be already educated BEFORE, You send them to school.
being able to pass the test, is all that matters. I work with kid's, everyday who, have Graduated High School and, in some cases, are in their first year of college who, can barely spell their own names. it's sad.
