I feel like giving points away, so...what prolific filmmaker (he died a few years ago) was a proponent of "closed-eye vision" ? He made hundreds of films from the 50's thru the early 2000's, often painting images on transparent film or scratching through black film.

Stan Brakhage. You can find his films via DVD called By Brakhage, produced by the Criterion Collection. There's tons of great stuff on it, and it's all the experimental stuff. The guy was such a big influence that he inspired filmmakers like David Fincher and Martin Scorcese. Unfortunately, Brakhage never got to the glory that such filmmakers received, but he was a real pioneer of filmmaking as an art form, a means of expression and a trailblazer. In other words, the guy was a badass.
