a formal party you should wear a black tie or tuxedo, after six (when the formal hr starts) try either a solid color or a pin strip. The dress shirt should not button down (broadcloth is going to be the best option) as for a stylish shirt you can try one that requires cuff links, or a colored shirt with a white collar and cuffs.

I have no idea of what kind of party you're talking about, but I assume it's at night... think Hollywood style... maybe EXPENSIVE Jeans even, with a sportcoat.
Or if it's "formal", then a regular suit, you could use a "sweater" type t-shirt instead of a regular shirt & tie.
I'd look at "grammy awards" and see what they wore / liked.

I would query the organizer of the party. If it is a formal affair, a tuxedo. If it is less formal, wear a suit that you would be comfortable if you were meeting clients at a business meeting.

it all depends on what kind of party you are going to like a nice party then a tux but a party party then anything. try to get a dress shirt on for nice party you know long sleeves buttons.
