there is always good and bad people in any business....I have been in business for thirty years myself and 10 years working for someone else before that....its hard to build a good reputation...but if you do good work and make yourself available when most others wont work as i did then your reputation will spread....didnt matter when someone called or needed to come to my shop..i would always go help them....then when you go to someones house explain to them truthfully what you are doing and why....i built such a good business that when other servicemen couldnt fix something they came to me for advise and technical help...or had me come on site to help them troubleshoot whatever problem they were having...never ran an ad anywhere except in yellow pages

My answer concerns marketing tips. I was service manager for a heating and cooling outfit for a few years. 1. Hire good help. Written test. Also have one of your servicemen build a working split system on wheels. If you don't do A/C work, apply the principle to something you do. Bug it and you have a practical test. Good help is expensive. Everyone wants it. 2. Word of mouth advertising is not dead. A real example. Serviceman found a broken belt on the indoor blower. Customer had just had a spring check out by our company. Serviceman called dispatcher as he had been trained by me to do. Dispatcher calls me. No labor, no parts, FREE. We should have caught that on the inspection and sold a new belt. Customer was some sort of fraternal group organization that published its own newspaper. Article ran giving our company name. Even down to the Serviceman apologizing for the inconvenience the customer suffered.
Just how many people did that reach? And the advertising was free! That kind of advertising can't be bought. 3. Have the printer run you up some door knob hangers. Hang one on the door of the house next to the job you just finished. They are cheap and they work. 4. Look at the competition and see what they do right and what they do wrong. Hope this helps out a little. At the time I left, we were direct mailing special offers to the customer list that we developed over a period of years. You can grow a business.

We have a handyman in our neighborhood, everyone loves him and he lives in a HUGE very nice house. His reputation keeps him busier than he can handle. Here's a marketing suggestion. As people get older, they want to maintain their homes, but just can't do the physical stuff they used to. And, they have money. Advertise in your local Senior Center newsletter..that should be cheap. Give a 2 hour class at your local community center, "basic home repairs" or "how a toilet works". Post notices on the golf club board, gym bulletin board, anywhere where people with time and money, but maybe no skill go. Good luck. A good handyman is worth his weight in gold.

I know exactly what you mean. One of the first things that will separate you from idiots that don't perform there obligations is see if you can join the BBB (better business Bureau). Another thing is acquire a license. This will also separate you from fly by nighters. Let customers know in other words that you maintain your bonds and insurances to help protect the consumer as well as yourself. Any credentials you can put on you business card, especially as a BBB member or similar will sell itself sometimes. Good Luck!!

One important thing is if you think most "handymen" are bums why would you want to market youself as a "handyman". You need to narrow your perameters. Don't be a jack of all master of none.

Try networking groups, your church, neighbors etc. Handymen usually are kept busy by word of mouth.

Start in small community. Word gets around, quickly. If people like yer work, they will recomend you to others. Plus when the nieghbors see something getting done to someone elses house, they start looking for improvement, themselves. It's called "Keeping up wih the Joneses".
