Use SAE 30 oil. It will use approximately 48 oz. of oil. The Briggs & Stratton part number is 100028, and the oil filter number is 492932S.

Oil Recommendation
SAE 30 40 °F and higher (5 °C and higher) is good for all purpose use above 40°F, use below 40°F will cause hard starting.
10W-30 0 to 100 °F (-18 to 38 °C) is better for varying temperature conditions. This grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption at 80°F(27°C) or higher.
Synthetic 5W-30 -20 to 120 °F (-30 to 40 °C) provides the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption.
5W-30 40 °F and below (5 °C and below) is recommended for winter use, and works best in cold conditions.
Type of oil to use
Use a high quality detergent oil classified "For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher.
Do not use special additives.
Choose a viscosity according to the table above.

I would use a sae 30 synthetic oil. With the amount of oil is used, it will be relatively cheap. You can almost never go wrong with a synthetic oil. I use Mobil One synthetic oils on all of my equipment and it is a little more pricey but I haven't ever had any oil related issues yet, I think because of the type of oil. Good Luck!!

lol good copy n paste on the first one... but it is true..
Straight HD-30 will cause hard starting and engine damage below 40-45 degrees Fahrenheit.. (rings, bore, conrod will scrape a lot basically from insufficient lubrication.)
5w-30 or 10w-30 conventional below 40.
OR 5w-30 or 10w-30 synthetic all year round..
I also recommend 15w-40 above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.... (CF / SF rated)
Change any oil... every 25 hours. check it often.

I've always just used regular motor oil for a car in my riding lawn mower --10W30. Never had a problem, had the mower for four years and it keeps on truckin'.
