I dont think anyone should get a light sentece for abusing an animal. Animals have souls if not they wouldnt be trainable.
However, on a different note. You see that the state can take away someones animals on the first day, and yet when someone abuses a child its takes months for them to intervene.
Our children are our future, not our animals.

The person should get it just as bad as if they abused an innocent child. The animal has feelings too and can also feel pain. It knows what is happening to it. It cannot speak up for itself so the law should speak up for the animal in this case and punish the person that is hurting them.

I wish i could say that equal punishment be rendered unto them, but that's not the way our legal system works; therefore, i would say that it should be a felony with a mandatory sentence. However, for that to work, laws in some states would have to be changed to show that pet animals are not just "property" and those who abuse pets should have to pay legal consequences.

For people who torture animals?
I would like to bring back burning at the stake, personally.
Defending yourself against a dog that bit you, as in rebelady's son's case, I think the owner needs to be sued for dog bite, and the dog given to a more responsible owner.
