I like pictures that represent the persons interests or a part of their character.
Before I decided to just be myself I had several. My very favourite was a caricature of a blonde gal who was swigging champagne, the banner read Floozy.

I like lots of color in mine, but really any avatar that's funny or appealing to the eye makes for a good avatar.
Yours is neat, and that one user named Pavic always has cool avatars. But where's your muffin? I liked the muffin...

You have to have something "legal" to begin with, then something that catches the eye easily to draw attention and also something that looks good once reduced even to the actual avatar size!Hopefully it should represent your personality!
