There are zero safety precautions at my college, and I'd assume most colleges. Nothing preventing this from happening.

No you should not be afraid.

And, you are probably wrong about there not being precautions in place for things like this at your school.

I am a grad student here at a different school in Virginia. I didn't know that my school had steps in place for things like this, but it does. We got an email shortly after all of this started and it details my schools plan.

People, you included, need to realize that this type of thing is a random act of violence that is very hard to plan for and prevent. We can go to one extreme and take away some of the rights we enjoy to ensure that we are ultra safe. Or we can be sane about this and understand that things like this happen but not very often.

There's no safety precautions that WILL stop someone who is determined to open fire on a crowd. NOTHING will stop this. Our culture of fear has made us terrified of that which we cannot control. Its a pretty shitty thing that happened at VT, but there's really no sense in thinking that we can prevent a like event from happening elsewhere.

Absolutely not. If we give people like that the power to make us live in fear, they've won. I, for one, will NOT give someone like that ANY power over MY life.

-edit-
there are more safety precautions at your school than you may realize. but, if you feel like something needs to be done, it is your responsibility as part of the student body to make it known and do something about it!

Nevertheless, deaths by campus massacre total less than 100 in all of US history. I wouldn't worry too much about that right now. Just take normal precautions against normal crime.

I wish the universities and colleges, even all schools here would use that kinda "metal detects" used at airports to screen students every morning to check for arms to school.

I'm always praying in my mind, asking myself could i also be gone tomorrow because some loser can't handle a break up or a failure in his program?

no way and common it was some maniac its not like in every school there are maniacs that will just go in the clasroom and kill everyone.

we cant let lunatics like that live in fear but we need to make sure they cant get to weapons and if they get caught with them a life sentence will do.

People should be scared to go anywhere where they aren't allowed to carry a gun. And should be suspicious of anyone who tries to stop them from having a gun.
