Yes, actually... every state has it's own goverment website. I live in Oregon, and ours is http://www.filinginoregon.com/

Try doing a search for filing in (such and such state) or (states name) secretary of state.

On these, you can search under the business or the persons name and it will show you when they registered the business, and those that are involved in ownership.

bbb.org is your best bet. It won't cover everyone, but you can search for businesses.
