Wood was in short supply, and it was easier to build with adobe clay.

It was stated earlier, but I feel the answer lacked a little depth. Yes they built out of what was on hand, and they built Haciendas with 6' thick walls because the thermal moderating effect of the Adobe made life bearable in the heat. A wooden structure would be prohibitivly expensive (they did use wooden beams for the roof) and wood is terribly hot in the day and FREEZING at night. The adobe would release the heat stored during the day when it was cold at night. Oddly, Snow is really common in the high desert, it only lasts for the night though. Deserts are difficult places to live because they have both extreems of temperature.

Maybe because the dry southwest was a desert and they could use the sand to construct adobe buildings? Just a thought.

When the day time temperatures reach 120 degrees, foot thick adobe walls provide much needed insulation from the heat. There is plenty of wood in the area, but adobe works much better for the climate.

The scientifically correct answer is that Native Americans crossed into America (from Asia) via a frozen-over land bridge. Thusly, they are purely of East Asian descent, and facial hair is not prominent in that region.

Depends of what their best resources were. That and the clay may make for a cooler home inside then wood might in the south.

Because Lowes nor Home Depot had expanded to the Southwest at that time.

Early people made their homes from what was available.
There are no trees in the desert!
There is sand and sun!
And sun and sand!

They used what they had - mud and grass or straw. Not many big trees in that desert country.

I guess they would have if trees were as abundant as clay.
