US Copyright law protects your work the moment you create it. To ENFORCE the copyright, you have to register it with the Library of Congress' Copyright Office.

It doesn't cost much to register your copyright, but it is important to note that your work is legally protected the moment you create it.

With all due respect to the answerer above this one, you gain no extra protections by mailing the document to yourself, and whether or not you post your work on a web site is irrelevant. That's what is commonly referred to as a "poor man's copyright," but it's erroneous. I've cited a second link below that specifically addresses that.

If you wrote them and mailed them to yourself, that is considered publishing. Also, you can post them to a web site, and it will be considered copyrighted.
