you like grits and fried chicken, you enjoy hanging out with people where ever... bbq's, bars, etc. you have poise when you walk, you are laid back, you are more willing to help others, and you know what to do when the siren sounds that a tornado or hurricane is coming... oh and you also know what to do if you see an alligator

I spent some time on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Ok, that was not terribly far South. However, oh, boy were they proud of being Southern! And yes, they had a strong Southern accent and the people I was staying with and their frieds were, frankly, rednecks. Nice people, too.
I stayed with a VERY Southern family. They flew the Rebel flag at times, the family had strong links to the Confederacy, etc. I was ribbed a bit for my long hair, being a California boy, and my prissy ways, however, I was family. "Don't they got no barbers in California, boy?"
I was treated very well, despite being under constant threat to awaken some day with make up and a girly 'do. If a guy had long hair and fell asleep in a chair around these people, the guy usually awoke with an elaborate, I think it is called, "french twist" and some makeup. They did not see the need to awaken their "gussied up" victim and much hilarity abounded.
I really was treated well for the few years I stayed there.
The one time I slipped and said "y'all" was a matter of much hilarity within that family and their friends. I have STILL not lived it down. I wanted to rip my traitorous tongue out and stomp on it. It would not have been so bad except that I had sworn I would NEVER say "y'all" and might have made a little bit of fun of their accents upon occasion. Reciprocated, of course.
----edited to add because of the answer after mine....
Did you HAVE to say the "H" word? I was there when Isabel came through, a level 1. I was hiding in the basement while the rest of the family was upstairs, carrying on like nothing happened. I swear there was a frieght train running overhead.
However, I handled the Loma Prieta quake (7.0) calmly. I have never seen a non-Californian handle more than a 4-5 calmly.
So there!

well bless yer heart... stickin up fer yer kin-folk down here...
LOL.. I love the south. Admittedly, I had some stereotypes of Southerners, before I moved here (NC). But once I got to know the people here (and I live wa-a-a-a-a-y out in the country, not to many transplanted folks out here, just real honest to goodness southerners). People are friendly, simple (in a good way) and helpful.
TV and movies portray southerners badly, in the same way they portray NYC Italians as all belonging to the mob, Southern California as bubbleheaded surfers (lol...), etc etc.

I have lived in the North and South about an equal amount of time. The North is home to me because of my family but I think people in the South are nicer.

I live in Louisiana and very proud to be from the South--I was raised here--We are a friendly people, willing to help strangers and our own alike--people speak and wave to you here--doesn't matter who you are! We believe in God --morales and trying to raise our children right! I have also been to New York and Chicago and found it to be very rude to everybody--nobody spoke to me or even acted like I was there--just rushed by, seemed always in a hurry! So-I love our southern way of life--Visit us sometimes--you might like us!

I am a Yankee from Wisconsin. However, I love the south. My aunt lives in Mississippi and my other in Virginia. I lived in the south for 2 years and I loved it. I love everything about it.

Generally speaking, I think you are all uneducated, drooling, knuckle dragging redneck, confederate flag wielding, cousin humping bastards.
But no, really... that's just Texas. But really again, I've never been South (visiting Southern California hardly counts) so I can't really form a true opinion. Enjoy the laughs :). If you get offended, lighten up.

I find people from the south to be very friendly, too friendly.I never trust someone who is sickening sweet.People I have known from the south were so nice to others face but would gossip as soon as the person left the room.I'm sure not all are like this, people who are just to nice I do not trust.
