Then main thing plants need from the substrate is iron. Laterite is a good substrate additive for supplying iron, but plants can get iron directly from the water as well. If you tank is already set up filled and cycled, I would suggest you skip the substrate additives and just use a liquid fertilizer for the iron. Kent makes a few different freshwater plant supplements all of which are good and are available from most better pet shops or online suppliers.

If you have gravel, then putting in the substrate will be almost pointless. You should remove your substrate and go buy gravel from petco, although it is more expensive there then in privatly owned fish stores. it is more expensive but you know it is of higher quality and they have more of a selection
