I have recently gotten a replacement laptop but HP sent me back the old one to recover the data from it. Small problem--it has no power and will not turn on. I would like to transfer the data from the no-power laptop to the new one or to my desktop if that is easier. Any ideas? Please be step by step as I am very new to laptop use and only had my old one a month before the power went out on it for good. Thanks so much!!

I forgot to add that I don't have much information on the old laptop, just a few pictures and some college notes. I don't want to pay anyone to do the transfer and I don't want to go through a bunch of hard core technical stuff. Is it really worth it? Please tell me the easiest possible way.

You can pull the drives and swap in the old if it not messed up. Or you could get an external case to put your old harddrive into then boot it and recover files.
Try calling HP Ha Ha and see if they could help, You will probably need to get a technician to do this for you.
I can do it but i live in alaska. Contact me @ http://www.webpctuner.com if you are willing to send me your old drive. $20 plus you pay shipping

If you cant power on the laptop then you will have to remove the hard drive and have the data transfered by someone who has the ability to connect a laptop hard drive to your desktop system.

You could do it yourself, but you will need to purchase a special adapter and configure it as a slave.

Remove the old hard drive from PC(remove it from the housing also). Then get a external hard drive case to USB adapter. Make sure it's for a laptop type HD. Put the old HD in & plug it in to the "Good" pc. Start the copy/paste prosess. The cases cost less then $20.00. Shop around.

I have a kit like this. I love it. I can use it to read my old hard drives that I have, laptop hard drives and to back up other peoples dead computers stuff. Their processer died and they bought a new computer and paid me to get off their data.

remove your hard drive and hook it up to your desktop(you will need an adapter, go to a computer store) then set the jumpers so that your desktop recognizes both HDD's then it is usually as simple as drag n' drop...Or take it to a computer store and they will probably charge $100+ to do what I just said
