This is a tricky question, as it depends entirely on how sensibly you can budget. I'm pretty bad, and what I see as essentials others see as luxuries. On the other hand there are many things I'm happy to do without that others would see as essentials. Here's something to think about: I live quite well in northern Thailand on something like US$45 a day - cheap guesthouse, maybe one western meal per day for myself and my girlfriend, cigarettes, a few drinks etc. On the other hand, a staff member at a Chiang Mai 7-11 might earn 200 baht (£4) for an 8 hour shift, and they can survive on that. So, a local Thai could stretch £1,000 for 250 days. In my pocket it would last about 36 days. A traveller such as yourself paying nightly hostel rates, western restaurant bills, a few big nights out and the occasional cross country train? Could be anywhere from 10 days of lavish living to 20 of sensible enjoyment to 30 of frugal fun. I recently worked out that it's possible to live very carefully on about $20 a day, but you wouldn't want to do it long term. Just one tip: the cost of accommodation quickly adds up, so to make your money stretch as far as possible you should spend as much time as you can in cheap dorms rather than private rooms.

If I tried to stretch it probably over a few months. If this is extra money outside of my pay, it will last more than that, cause I would save it.
