if you replace your car's license plates, will you get the same number?

Our new car came with 666 in the license plate #. We want to get a different # without paying extra for a custom plate or personalized #. If we exchange it at the DMV, won't they give us a new one with a randomly generated number? We can't seem to find the answer on their website.
