Get the Blue "Screen of Death" again. That "Stop error" mens something. Gotta know the error for accurate advice. If it will start in "Safe mode" don't worry, prob. a simple driver or some other simple failure. Start in safe mode & try a sys restore to a day or 2 ago. Good luck.

Step one is to remember the error message you got. It's somewhere on the blue screen, and it's called a stop code. It will say something like STOP: TYPE_OF_ERROR
it will usually be followed by a code, like 0x24 or 0x00000024 and then in parentheses, four more codes like that. What you need are the stop code words, and the first 0x code, the one not inside the parentheses. With that, you can search on google or yahoo for "windows stop codes" and you'll get a number of sites that will explain what a stop code is, and what it means, and either will give you an idea how to fix it or will have links to other sites with some ideas. If you add the stop code itself to your search terms, you may get some specialized help. Be patient though, stop codes are often confusing and difficult even for experienced users to troubleshoot. If you get those details, you could add them to this question and then maybe someone can reply if the code looks familiar to them.

PS. Also, a manufacturer and model of laptop would help, some laptops come installed with "recovery" applications, like IBM and Lenovo laptops have, where you can boot to a recovery application without even using windows, and run diagnostics and fixing tools to get your system working again. Other laptops come with CDs that do the same thing. Often you can download these CDs from the manufacturer's website. But knowing the exact stop code(s) you get will mean you can do more specialized troubleshooting. It will help if you have access to another computer with a CD burner, since often you need to burn diagnostic programs to a CD, and then boot the latop from the CD instead of the hard drive.

A last resort is finding a pro or at least a "geek" friend to do all this for you. :)

1st step - when rebooting have it reboot in "safe" mode - this only loads what's needed to get the computer running. Obviously, something is amuck.... it usually happens when there is an incompatibility issue. The usual culprit is recently loaded software or loading a program that is incompatible to your operating system. In safe mode you can usually just go back and have you computer set itself back to a date before you installed or downloaded the program causing the problem. (Assuming you have backup dates on file). Worst case scenario, assuming you have no backups and can't diagnose the problem, you'll have to go into safe mode and get all of your info off, then reinstall your software using your reboot disk then put your stuff back in.

Good luck!

Sometimes Norton Systemworks ( http://www.symantec.com/ ) will include a CD to boot from if you have problems starting Windows; I suppose the Premier version is most likely to have one.

I would do the following only as a last resort, but you might want to browse the Linux distributions that are geared toward disaster recovery if all else fails:

http://www.linux.org/dist/

Live CDs would probably be your best bet since they load themselves without copying anything to the hard drive unless you specifically instruct them to.

Good luck.

Disconnect the battery and try to restart. Keep on trying to turn it on and off. Many times this is caused by software problems when music sites such as itunes etc are used. It may not work, but it's worth a try.

Could be the blue screen of death.

Try starting in safe mode and if you can do a system restore to an earlier date.

Go to START / PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / SYSTEM TOOLS / SYSTEM RESTORE.
