I am just horrified by what seems to be their negligence for two hours. Of course no one knows if lives could have been saved. But what's wrong with an ABUNDANCE of caution when you know there's a murderer on the loose?

Steve - why wait 2 hours to send out an email when you know there is a murderer on the loose?

Tammy, at 9:30 they did warn everybody at once - with a single e-mail and sounding sirens. Why did they wait 2 hours?

vishunfadez - even if they did somehow have reason to believe that...why not send the email out right away?

Totally agree with you. I am still in shock that there was not more done in the two and a half hours after the first shooting. I feel terrible for those who are now being blamed, because I definitely don't think it was out of malice. But, always venture to the side of caution. Always.

I just don't understand what they could have done differently. What does it mean the school should have been "closed down?" It's a 2,600-acre campus! How do you close down something like that?
Also what has been said is that they thought it was a domestic violence incident and was isolated. They had absolutely no way of knowing that "a murderer was on the loose" with the intention to commit such a crime. We're not even absolutely sure it WAS the same person!
I have never heard of a campus or any other place getting "locked down" when two people get shot and the gunman leaves. They thought the dude left. Plain and simple.
I am sure they did the best they could under the circumstances. Perhaps they did not want to incite widespread panic. Maybe they should have had a plan for this type of situation, but I'd like to know how many schools do.

I am not upset because I wasn't there and I don't think I have all of the information necessary to make a judgement. I am not a trained security agent, so I cannot determine if mistakes were made or not. What I am sure of is that the Police and Administration of Tech would not put the lives of students and faculty at risk. They used the information and knowledge they had at the time to determine what needed to be done and that is what they did.
I don't think we can really understand the magnitude of trying to control a situation where you have to consider people coming to a campus from many different directions. Where there are people already in buildings. Where some people have access to phones, email and so on and others do not. I think we take for granted that it would be easy to get the information out. And then what about causing panic?
I just cannot blame them for doing what they are trained to do.

I don't understand why people ARE upset, other than that the media is stirring them up.
i watched the press conference and i don't think the president did anything differently than anyone else in his situation.
------------
addendum:
they were investigating the crime and didnt' have reason to believe they were dealing with anything but an isolated domestic incident where the killer fled the campus (and maybe the state)...
maybe it was too slow for the email..
but when there's a stabbing in my campus' neighborhood (which is smaller than the VA tech campus) we don't get our "safety notice" until a day after the event... so what they did doesn't seem so far out of line.
they simply didn't know what they were dealing with -- and they notified people as soon as they *did* know.
and the dorm where it happened was immediately locked down... the whole campus would have been overkill for an isolated domestic incident -- we're talking about alerting 26k people over an incident where the criminal has supposedly fled the scene and state...
it would only be a problem if the prez had some aforeknowledge of the shooting-spree that was about to take place, or if he purposely delayed.
i'm sure neither of these is the case...

It is, quite simply, TOO SOON to be upset with anybody except the monster who shot all those people.
There will be time enough, to evaluate other peoples failings another day.
And there is a big point: the shooter is a MURDERER. If VT's administration did something wrong, it was a failing, not a crime.

Monday morning quarterback! 2 people shot does not make a masacar. Closing down a 2600 acre campus won't stop anyone from killing more people and maybe even make it easier since those people are now locked in with the killer.

it started at 715 am while people were coming to school. HOW CAN YOU WARN 11,000 PEOPLE AT ONCE? the media causing trouble again. they said they felt it was an isolated incident. and while they were in damage control at one location, it continued 2 hours later at the other end of the 2600 acre campus. who knew it would happen again 2 hours later?

I am not upset with the admin. When I was in college I remember how silly the campus police were. They were used to writing parking tickets and that is it! I think they probably feel pretty horrible. I just pray for the families.

They say they had reason to believe that the shooter had left the campus. the media is jumping all over this one because they seem like the best one's to blame. probably should've locked down the campus. This will just change how things are done now.

"Of course no one knows if lives could have been saved"---you make this statement yet you still want to blame the univ admin?
Why don't you just wait to find out more info before you start pulling your fingers out of your butt and start pointing them?
LONGHAIR--I believe I did answer your question. It's not my fault if you don't know how to read. Let me simplify it for you: wait and get more info before you pass judgement. They aren't even telling us about who the shooter was yet. See you in kindergarten class tomorrow
