where an accident can happen in your home to your family? What good does an unloaded, locked away gun do in an emergency?

A secure weapon that you are "TRAINED" to handle can be very effective in an emergency. It all goes to training though. Don't just go out and buy one and expect to be like Rambo. You have to be very responsible, make sure that you have a secure place to store it (such as a gun safe,) and get training. I cannot overemphasize training enough. Without training, someone could take it away from you and do great harm to you and your family. Also, training teaches you the laws and when deadly force is authorized.

People have owned guns for years and used them for safety. My parents had more access to guns and their generation was a lot less violent and gun safety wasn't as big a concern. The only reason gun accidents at home have gotten more press in recent decades is because there those who have become paranoid pacifists who want to find reasons to lock up all guns. If you tell people they can’t carry weapons, only the law abiding will listen. A criminal can get a gun if they wanted to. In countries that ban all weapons, they can still be obtained illegally. The average person can be trusted with a gun. Even in the most violent neighborhoods in our country, 99% of the residents do not break the law and would use a handgun only to protect themselves. It is a matter of changing the culture and human hearts. This campus was a place that wouldn’t allow guns – so only the criminals had them. It is quite possible that a student with a gun could have ended all of this. More gun laws against the law abiding will only make everyone less safe. We need to do everything we can to keep guns away from criminals while letting people defend themselves.

I have several loaded guns (rifles, shotguns, and pistols) around my house. My guns are loaded but no round or shell in the chamber. I have a loaded pistol in my nightstand drawer right next to my bed. When ever I go on a long trip or camping I always have a loaded weapon at arms length.

In my rural community, a couple of years ago, a local man had
to shoot and kill a man when that man broke into his home. The local, a farmer, apparently kept his weapon loaded and didn't hesitate to use it to protect his wife and kids. He has two teenage girls. The perp wasn't a local. He was just passing through. I wonder how many other communities he had passed through before he messed with the wrong farmer.

in most cases it won't do any good. i can place a loaded gun anywhere in my house and my children won't touch it. the best thing is to educate your children on gun safety. that being said the best weapon for home defense is a shotgun, pumping it is a recognizable sound and may deter the intruder.

It only takes a second to pump a shell into my 12Ga and fire it, hence it's not loaded and it is, so don't come around my place at the wrong time of day!

So your solution is just get shot and not have a gun?

Why install doors or locks in that case.
