Well I don't know of a song specifically about a mother dying of cancer, but you might want to check out the song Cancer by My Chemical Romance it's a great song, and could be what your looking for.

I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but try "Into The Ocean" by Blue October. There's a scene in the movie "Master And Commander" where the young lieutenant that everyone dislikes goes out on the deck of the ship one night and, taking a cannonball with him, jumps overboard...still holding onto the cannonball. That's what this particular song reminds me of. On another note...I sincerely doubt that you have absolutely no friends. You just haven't found them--or they haven't found you--yet.

Well,
Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day is a sad song. And it's about Billie Joe Armstrong's father dying, so i'm not sure what exactly your looking for, but hope you find it.

Oh, and "Freak_Out", Lucille is a horrible song about death, my mother [ yes the song is that old ] has told me stories about how her and her brothers, when they were kids, used to make fun of that song, i can't stand it ! but, whatever, schmuck.

There's a country song called "The Baby" by Blake Shelton, it mentions his mother dying at the end of the song.

Alter Bridge - "In Loving Memory"
The song is about Mark Tremonti's mother passing away. This song makes me teary-eyed everytime I listen to it. Here are the lyrics:

"In Loving Memory"

Thanks for all you've done
I've missed you for so long
I can't believe you're gone
You still live in me
I feel you in the wind
You guide me constantly

I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
And ill come home and I miss your face so
Smiling down on me
I close my eyes to see

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

I carry the things that remind me of you
In loving memory of
The one that was so true
Your were as kind as you could be
And even though you're gone
You still mean the world to me

I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
You were always there waiting
But now I come home and it's not the same, no
It feels empty and alone
I can't believe you're gone

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

I'm glad he set you free from sorrow
I'll still love you more tomorrow
And you will be here with me still

And what you did you did with feeling
And You always found the meaning
And you always will
And you always will
And you always will

Ooo's

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

First thing that popped into my head was 'Lucille'

"you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, with 4 hungry children and a crop in the field"

Its a really old song, but the words in it, seemed to fit.

Well the first thing that came to mind was that "Christmas Shoes" song, but after reading your description "Last Kiss" came to mind, you don't have to play the lovey-dovey stuff, just the sad part about her dying.
