Michael Jackson is a way better dancer. Michael did imitate some of James Brown's moves like the spin. However, Michael combined Brown's moves with others' moves, added his own twist to them and produce innovative dance steps. That is why Michael Jackson is a step beyond legend.

I would say they are both equal based on there time frames, but personal bias would have me say James Brown because Michael Jackson admitted in one of his interviews that James Brown inspired some of his moves to include the world famous moonwalk.

Years ago, Michael admitted in one of his interviews that he was inspired by James Brown(R.I.P) and his dancing. So clearly, I think that Both James Brown and Michael Jackson are equally both good dancers.
