These are called the y and x axes because remember that equations in algebra usually have expressions in terms of these variables. As you get more advanced, these algebraic equations and stuff are used to explain the properties of graphs. A 2-dimensional graph would have 2 axes-x and y. A 3-dimensional graph has 3 axes - x, y & z. As can be seen, these are the last three letters of the roman alphabet. Hence, it could also be metaphoric of the fact that the most advanced or LATEST algebra deals with graphs. Enough food for thought?
