He's to big! Did they ever defeat him in the comic book? Didn't they always need The Watcher's help?

You’re right, they can’t defeat him without help.
The only way they were able to beat him, ever, was by cheating (the Watcher broke his oath to just stay out of it and watch!) The Watcher told them where to find a super weapon aboard Galactus; own ship (the ultimate nullifier) and they were able to get him to back down. Otherwise he would just swat them as the gnats they are. That’s they way he talks, and that’s the way he is.

The correct answer is launching Thing at him using Mr. Fantastic as the slingshot. Granted, this was a Galactus who hadn't eaten for a long time and was very weak as a result, and the FF did have help from several other prominent Marvel Superheroes. But, I believe it was the one time they won without cosmic intervention.

Well, if you're going by the comic books, then the FF used the Ultimate Nullifer.

It's supposed to be the one weapon that can defeat big G.

with the ultimate nullifier and some help from the silver surfer.

the watcher never helps anybody-he is only there to observe and has to stay neutral in everything.
