I don't think people necessarily like manipulating people. Most of the time, people who are chronic manipulators were raised in household where it was taboo to be honest and open about what you want. So basically they learned that in order to express their needs/wants, they need to do it discreetly and dishonestly. I think that it also occurs when children ask for something openly, their parent says no, and then they go about it dishonestly and they end up getting what they want. If parents don't catch on to this, the child learns this is a way of effectively getting their needs and wants met. In other words, the best way to go about it when you are a parent is to make sure your child is comfortable asking for things and is okay with you saying no. And when they start crying, screaming, throwing a temper tantrum (all ways children manipulate) don't give into them. Then they will become un-manipulative adults.

Because it's like a chess game but with actual people, to get what they want, to make a fool out of the other person, there are so many motives.

you know Alexis, I wonder the same thing. Some ppl just have it in their heart to do mean things to others. I met a lot of people who were not happy w/ themselves so they would constantly put others down and try to belittle others to make themselves feel better. I try my hardest to not EVER EVER let myself become an evil, jealous, envious person. Its not healthy at all

people who suffer from low self esteem and low confidence in themselves often seek others who are in need...to be the one who is the rescuer is very empowering instead of always be the needy one who needs to be rescued
