Hi, I am in a bit of a wrestling match with my two favorite hobbies. I really want to persue both of them but that probably won't happen. Anyway, if I do go into cosmetology I would like to do it on Broadway or Hollywood because that is my dream!! But then again acting is another dream. Please if there is anything you can tell me, schools suggestions anything, I WILL TAKE IT!!
Thankx :)

When you say cosmetology, I'm unclear whether you mean being a make-up artist/hairstylist or whether you mean you want to focus on theatrical make-up. It sounds to me like the latter since you would like to practice "cosmetology" on Broadway or in Hollywood.

In any case, my answer is absolutely do both. It is extremely difficult to make a living solely as an actor. If you visit the SAG, AFTRA or AE websites they'll give you tons of depressing stats on just how hard it is to be an actor. But if you can supplement one passion with another, you'll be on great shape.

Not that it isn't hard to make money as a make-up artist, but at least you could get a job doing make-up at a spa or Macy's to pay the bills while you are auditioning. Or if you get a great job acting (thumbs up for you!) you could talk with the make-up folks doing your show, pick their brains, and see if you can't help them out a little bit. And let's face it we all have to start somewhere, and it isn't usually the lead role or as Trish McEvoy.

Also, I couldn't find the school (sorry), but their are some amazing school in the mid-west where you can major in theatre/theatrical make-up. I want to say Indiana (Evanston, IU, Ball State....), Illinois (?) or Minnesota had a great theatre program that would showcase you in NYC and LA upon graduation and offered a theatrical make-up program (pretty rare, there are only a handful of schools that offer one). I know the mid-west probably doesn't fit your idea of heading off to NYC or LA but seriously, a good foundation will give you a headstart.

Contact theatres in your area (large and small) and ask questions about training, recommended universities, books, programs, etc. Don't overlook any source of information! =)

Best of luck to you!

well...I know people are saying "acting because you never know where you'll get with cosmetology," but its REALLY the other way around.

acting is something that only the BEST can get it into and take somewhere. to go to school as a theatre major...well, you'll be one of 100000000000000000000 at any univeristy. acting is great, i did Cirque Du Soleil for a while, but its usually only for those who are the best of the best of the best. and once you find out in college that maybe your not the best of the best and your not willing to drop everything else, it sucks. you have to give up on seeing family or if you want kids they'll be shipped around from nanny to nanny because you dont have the time.

as for cosmotology, thats easier. when it comes to studying and practice, cosmotology i of course difficult, but you can gaurentee after you get a degree that you'd be able to get a job as a cosmotologist and get a great amount of money for it.

its your decision, but realize that "acting" is nothing special when you enter the real world.

why not try majoring in Cosmotology and minoring in Theatre.

what kind of theatre are you into? Broadway? Movies? Shakespearean? it all depends.

follow your heart i guess.

Schools Good for Theatre:

1. University of Michigan- best theatre program in the USA

2. UC Berkley- great for all types of preforming arts

3. New York University- best if you want to go into movie acting

Cosmotology Schools/Doctor Schools:

1. UCLA - of course one of the best schools

2. University of Massachusetts- good cosmotology school

3. Boston College- private school, but great

have fun and best of luck!

I would probably go with Acting first, just to see if you can do it, but it is EXTREMELY hard to get into the tv and movie business especially in New York and Hollywood. Then if you become a famous actress you can have your own cosmotology line of makeup and all that. Two birds with one stone. If the acting doesn't work out then just go into cosmotology. It will probably a lot easier to get into. Good Luck! :-)

You just have to do what you love. whatever feels like you feel its where you belong or are excepted acting you can express your self and be tons of people you have always wanted to be but...its very hard to succeed in it cosmetolegy sounds fun and you get to make people beautiful...but it may be a little boring if you are interested in the life style of actresses...just choose what will make you happy
