"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
Since the Framers found the first part so important they wrote a poorly formed sentence, could you please name the "well regulated" group you've joined?

The National Guard, US Military, local and state police are well regulated. A bunch of guys sitting around drinking beer and shooting the empties, not so much.

Read Federalist Papers number 4, 29, and 46. WE are the well-regulated militia there genius.
Either you believe that you have a fundamental right to provide a level of security for yourself and your family, or you do not, and believe that you should be wholly dependent on the government. If you believe in the latter, please move to a country that shares this belief, because it isn't the United States of America.

You're using a modern day definition while the Founding Fathers used the definition of the day. When they said "well regulated" they meant "well equipped".
You need to dig a bit deeper to find their meaning, might I suggest reading some of the writings of James Madison Monroe, or Jefferson?
When you mention the National Guard, you are referring to the"organized militia", the United States militia, by definition is every male citizen between the ages of 17, and I believe 50 (it may be lower, I'm going by memory).
The reason for the Second Amendment is to protect the people from the government. The Founding Fathers knew all to well the effects of a tyrannical government disassociated from the people.
My final point would have to be.... historically, when a government bans and starts confiscating firearms (think Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin - to name a few), you end up with people being round up and ultimately killed......

At the time the citizens of the new USofA didn't all belong to well regulated militias either. Most were members of their state militias by the virtue that all landowners were required to belong. The framers understood that if there was a need to defend the country that people would need to be called up in a hurry and that they would need to be armed since the technology at the time did not enable them to mass produce firearms. It does not say those that belong to a militia may own firearms. It states "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
By enabling us to keep and bear arms then militias would be able to be rapidly formed and deployed as necessary.

During those times every citizen was part of the militia. Who do you think the states called up for the revolutionary war and the civil war? the citizens bearing arms. Furthermore the whole intent of the amendments to the constitution was to limit government powers not bestow new government powers. The whole national guard argument just doesn't cut it when you look at why the amendments were added.

It doesn't specify a well regulated militia as a prerequisite, it just emphasizes it's importance, and the importance of people having access to weapons should the need arise. Lets not encourage people to run off and form independent militias!
