what does the movie Patch Adams say about one's commitment to a process or an attitude?

it's been a while since i've seen the movie...as far as i know the whole story is about exactly that: commiting yourself to something you believe is right.
in particular, it shows how extremely resistant and persistant you have to be to succeed (and still keep sanity...).
humans have always been afraid of change, of thought itself. it takes a lot to convince people to change and bend rules in the right direction when they are afraid of the consequences, but the movie shows (to me) that, if you believe it is time for a change, it is always worth fighting for it, no matter at what expenses.
and who wouldn't do anything to see a child smile?
