Interestingly, 1000 deaths is the minimal criteria for defining an interstate conflict as "war." Other than that, no real significance beyond the tremendous loss of human life.

Genocide, if the deaths were caused by premeditation. (ie - Hitler's policy towards Jewish people and well, everyone else who wasn't blonde and blue-eyed)

Disaster or Tragedy if the deaths were caused by an unexpected event, such as a plane crash or a natural disaster. (ie - Hurricane Katrina aftermath)
