This is pretty awful what happened today.
There are only so many things you can do to prevent this kind of tragedy without making living unfairly tough for the majority of us.
There are a couple of things that could be done via media reporting. Instead of allowing a level of hysteria or myth surrounding the gun man, such as "angel of death" or similar over the top terms. How about "the disaffected youth / the bored teenager... who carried out this murder" and not try and give them any more coverage other than minimal info.
I am not trying to be flippant here; i'm just saying that in this media-crazed celebrity-obsessed culture, we should ease off in allowing any person who murders people in this awful, stupid, way, any notoriety of any kind.
Incidentally, I am from (and live) in a country that does not allow gun usage and our police force is unarmed- which is something i approve of.

Well, there are ways to seriously cut down on the chances:
1) Metal detectors at each entrance to the building(s)
2) TRAINED armed guards in the building(s)
3) Automatic expulsion if a student brings or attempts to bring a weapon to school
But, the liberals would have fits, and people would cry "foul" over the metal detectors, calling it an "invasion of privacy" and they would have fits over the guards, crying that it was like a "police state" even though everyone could still do any LEGAL thing they wanted to do with the guards there. And there is no way they would stand for the mandatory expulsion, just because the broke a strict rule!

I know what you mean! Even if they ban guns for everyone, you couldn't get every single gun out there. Then, it would create a blackmarket for guns so whoever has enough to pay for it, will get it. Plus, even without guns, he could have burned down the school, killing a lot more people or bombing the school. So just like you said, there's no way to ensure school safety...Sad but true.

yes- OUTLAW GUNS! In Britain, there was a shooting in a school so we outlawed guns, and there hasn't been one since. I don't understand this weird American obsession with weaponry. If you looked at places where guns are illegal, you'd realise there's less gun crime, and almost all of it is confined amongst criminals and gangs who can be bothered to get their hands on guns in the first place, so the fear of being shot randomly in the street as an ordinary, law abiding citizen, just doesn't occur.
