Absolutely, fight fire with fire. I think it should be mandatory if you are driving drunk you must also have a firearm with you to protect yourself from all the people you encounter with road rage, which you caused with your drunk driving.

In a study by John Lott of the University of Chicago Law School, the study recognized as the most comprehensive gun control study of all time, showed that violent crime is lower in areas where people are allowed to own and carry guns more freely.
here let me give you an excerpt regarding people being able to conceal and carry guns---
Thirty-one states give their citizens the right to carry concealed handguns if they do not have a criminal record or a history of significant mental illness. My study, with David Mustard, a graduate student in economics at the University of Chicago, analyzed the FBI's crime statistics for all 3,054 American counties from 1977 to 1992. Our findings are dramatic. Our most conservative estimates show that by adopting shall-issue laws, states reduced murders by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%. If those states that did not permit concealed handguns in 1992 had permitted them back then, citizens might have been spared approximately 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults and 12,000 robberies. To put it even more simply Criminals, we found, respond rationally to deterrence threats.

Here's a solution: When people walk into a bar they give their keys to the hostess or the bartender. To get their keys back they have to blow into a breathalizer. If they blow more than the legal limit (depending on the state) then the bar calls them a cab. Simple as that! If the bar fails to do a breathalizer on a drunk customer, they are subject to a $50,000 fine AND listed as a co-defendent in any civil suits. Imagine how many lives would be saved if there was as little as a 20-30% reduction in drunk drivers as a result of something like this! Seems like a pretty simple solution to a growing problem as far as I'm concerned.

I've got to contradict American2006. The 2nd amendment guarantees a citizen's militia (aka the police) the right to guns, not ordinary citizens.
And while I don't support an outright ban on guns, I do support extremely strict gun laws and harsh penalties for those who break them. The ones on the books now are a joke.

How about licence and regulate bullets. Make them prohibitively expensive and enforce background checks. After all, guns don't kill people, people who load bullets into guns and fire them at people kill people.
Keep and bear arms all you want, even if you aren't part of a "well regulated militia". Just make it cost to shoot them.
