Polygons are named using Greek roots that describe the number of angles (always equal to the number of sides), appended with the suffic "-gon," meaning "angle." Two well-known exceptions are triangle (instead of "trigon") for three sides and quadrilateral (instead of "tetragon") for four sides. But most polygons follow the rule, such as hexagon ("six angles"), octagon ("eight angles"), and dodecagon ("twelve angles"). It is also considered acceptable to write out the numeral instead, thus "17-gon" instead of "heptadecagon," where the latter is also correct.

Wikipedia has a good chart on the names.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_Polygons
"In geometry a polygon (IPA: [ˈpɒliɡən]) is a plane figure that is bounded by a closed path or circuit, composed of a finite number of sequential line segments. The straight line segments that make up the boundary of the polygon are called its edges or sides and the points where the edges meet are the polygon's vertices or corners. The interior of the polygon is its body.

A polygon is a 2-dimensional example of the more general polytope in any number of dimension."

The names aren't important, only if you're interested in becoming an etymologist. A mathematician doesn't care about the Greek names. But since you want to know, the polygones names are easy to find on the web.
