I have always wanted to go to Medical School, but I want to know how difficult the challenge really is.

Thanks!

OK, both of these guys are partly wrong. hahahah!

You can get information about this at the website of the Association of American Medical Colleges. They say that about 35,000 kids applied and 17,000 were accepted in US med schools last year. That would be 46% - but wait a minute -- that only includes the kids who completed their applications with the endorsement of their colleges. There were many thousands more kids who were not endorsed, and probably 10,000s of kids who started out in college to be premed and then dropped out because they couldnt hack it.

OK, so the real situation is like this - IF you take all the prereq courses, including organic chem, biochem, physics, calculus, etc... and you get very good marks - at least a 3.7 or better in the tough science courses - AND if you do all the other stuff that your premed advisor tells you to do, like volunteering, etc. THEN you have about a 50:50 chance to get in on your first try. If you dont get in right away you can do more work and try again later.... maybe about 1/3 or more of the kids who were endorsed and turned down at first will get in later.

So, this is all about having determination and staying power. If you are the kind of person who gives up, then you wont make it.

It's hard. Actually, I think what the person who answered before me was trying to say was this:
The acceptance rate for medical school is WAY LESS than 46%. It's more like....2-3%. Tons and tons of people apply to medical school. At a not-so-competitive school, you might have 2000-3000 applications, with 50-100 people getting in. So a very small number of people get in...you have to have impecable qualifications.

Generally, you need a 3.5 GPA and 10's on each MCAT section will make you competitive!

It's very, very difficult. The National acceptance rate was 46% last year. Even at MIT, the school with arguably the smartest science students in the country, the rate was below 80%.

Hope for the best and work hard, but have a backup plan. Good luck.

actually it's tough, many do not get into till there third 12 months of making use of. as corny because it would sound you must have ardour considering that the admissions committee has some way of seeing proper via you. in addition they are watching for terribly good rounded men and women and lots of have the stereotype that med colleges wish you to be a technology main, have best MCATs, be an EMT and paintings at a nursing house however the admissions committee sees enormous quantities of candidates that experience THAT SAME software and so its tough for them to examine who did the extracurriculars that they did considering that they're obsessive about technology, from the ones candidates who handiest did the ones extracturriclars considering that the idea it might cause them to appear well. eighty% of candidates are certified, however handiest 30% can get in...its all approximately the extracurriculars and what seperates you from the gang and that's a undeniable fact that soooo many pre-med pupils do not even recall. a few will flip you down even while you consider you may have the ultimate software, however it regularly entails state residency and different mini elements that they are going to select up on that you just would have not ever imagined. they do not anticipate you to be ideal under no circumstances however they've a min quantity of men and women to take delivery of and if all their candidates are ultimate, there going to ought to flip down a person! a lot of the ones men and women who didnt get accredited didnt relatively wish to be there. it is tough to get into..however under no circumstances inconceivable...you simply ought to wish it greater than whatever else. wish i helped ;)
