Technically, Hammett, because he has the music school education etc., but as far as emotion, feeling, execution, and power? Hendrix all the way.

What people don't remember is that before Jimi Hendrix, NOBODY played guitar like that. NOBODY. Guitars sounded very different. Even the most innovative guitarists before Hendrix only reached a certain level, and most guitars on the radio sounded twangy or surfy (like the Ventures, for example).

After Jimi Hendrix arrived, NOTHING was the same. I mean, if you listen to "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" from the viewpoint of someone in the 1960s who had only heard guitars go "plink, twang, plink," it's like a whole different instrument. In that song Jimi sings, "Well, I stand up next to a mountain, and chop it down with the edge of my hand," and during the solo, it sounds like he could actually DO it. He doesn't even sound like he's playing a guitar any more. It's the sound of planets colliding, pure electricity being manipulated fearlessly. Nobody ever played like that or ever will again, not with that force or intensity.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

woah, woah, woah, people are going a little overboard on Jimi... probably the best guitarist ever, WAY out of Kirk Hammett's league. As far as Jimi's sound, he was definitely an innovator but I wouldn't say he changed the way guitar sounded, at least he wasn't soley responsible (Beatles, Cream, Pete Townshend, etc.). And regardless of what some other answer says, before Jimi all guitars did NOT sound "surf" or "twangy" (most people didn't hear Jimi until 1967!!!).
I used to like Metallica a lot, and I do think Hammett is good, but being good has nothing to do with playing fast. Pink Floyd's David Gilmour is considered by many to be one of the best, and it is because of his ability to bend notes (like Jimi, he has a feel for guitar that goes beyond the technicallities).

i love kirk hammett alot more than i like hendrix, but there is no doubt in my mind that hendrix had the ability to play as fast as hammett. remember though, that without hendrix, there probably wouldnt be a kirk hammett.

Kirk might completely trash scale back. And Metallica might ruin weapons N Roses. scale back is sweet however yet Kirk on all of those solos is is rather good thinking Metallica has over ninety 5 songs. And Kirk became into individually knowledgeable via Joe Satriani.
