You don't really need to get an attorney, just contact your local child support enforcement agency. They are normally in the phone book under the Department of Social Services. You fill out paperwork there telling them who the father is and what you are requesting and they will contact him. They will take your financial information and then ask him for his and then compute the amount of child support from that. If he denies being the father they will then order a paternity test prior to deciding on the child support amount.

An attorney has nothing to do with child support. It is decided by the state NOT an attorney. Would you tell your child to wait for dinner until you can hire a chef? The money is for CHILD SUPPORT, which means it supports your child. DON"T wait ,kids get more expensive EVERYDAY!!!!

Not necessary. Hopefully fathers name is on birth certificate as it makes things easier and quicker. You can contact your legal aid association for a free attorney or just file for support on your own. The court clerk will tell you how to do so and what papers youll need

Makes no difference if you were married or not. Go to the Attorney General Office in your state, they will help you fill out paperwork and they will tend to the rest, may take a while, but they will take charge for you. No attorney is necessary, let the AG office do it.

SunShine, don't wait for a lawer, for most states provide free legal service on child support issues. As a single Mother you deserve every advantage and your child deserves every right to support. It does not matter you were not married. Fathers are responsible for thier children, by law.
Please call the Division of Child Support Enforcement nearest you so they can advise you and get the ball rolling. You have rights, use them, for you and your child. You both deserve it! Good Luck!

You need to file for child support as soon as possible. If you do not know of the free agency in your area that will help with this, call up your local child/family services department. They will know who you should contact.

Most states you can file the paperwork at the court house yourself and some states have a legal aid that can help you walk through the paperwork.
Other states the dept of social services can do that for you.

There is a lot of paperwork required, but it is worth it. The workers in the office will help you each step of the way.
Good luck!

Not sure where you live, but in California you can go to the Dept of Social Services and they will file the paperwork with the court for you.
