When my son was born, I dilated to six centimeters and stayed there for 20 (!) hours. They gave me pitocin and everything, but I just wouldn't dilate. It did hurt like mad, though...I was actually hallucinating before they gave me my epidural! (Apparently, you're supposed to get breaks between your contractions.) But no more dilation, no matter what they did, so they (and I) finally gave up and did a c-section at 20 minutes to midnight.
I think my little guy just wasn't too sure about being born. It took us 14 months to conceive him and he was nine days overdue...he just wasn't quite sure about this big scary world of ours. 19 months later, he's gotten used to it and I think he's planning on taking it over.

That is a long time. Those first babies can really wreak havoc on their poor mamas! I didn't take quite that long to dilate, but I pushed from 5 pm, until 3 am before I FINALLY had him. He was 9 lbs 3 oz, posterior (facing the wrong way) and was delivered by forceps which the OB cut me with internally! And yet here I am 37 weeks pregnant with # 4! Yep, its official! I'm nuts. Congrats on your little guy. I was barely 20 when I had my first, and everything was great. Age doesn't make a good mother, I've seen some teenagers that parent better then adults. Take care.

My labor and delivery were also all messed up. I lost my mucous plug at 35 weeks, and slowly started trickling amniotic fluid. I went into the hospital, and they hooked me up to an i.v. That night, my water broke in a gush, and then the contractions started hard. But, the whole next day, they would come on hard, then ease up. They said I wasn't in "true labor" and when they checked me, I was only dilated to 1cm.
After another 12 hours, I had them check me again. I was sure my labor must be progressing because I had worked through HOURS of hard, painful contractions. They said I was still at a 1 or 2cm. I wanted to die! They wouldn't even give me an epidural if I wanted one, because they said I wasn't even in true labor. WTF????
Then, they gave me Stadol to help me sleep and ease the pain. An hour later, I woke up and had to go to the bathroom. While in there, I got a strong contraction and said "I feel like I have to push!" They said "No, that can't be." But I had them check me and I was fully dilated, and they could see the baby crowning!
So, every pregnancy is different, and every woman's labor is different.
I had to have pitocin, too, because once I started pushing, the contractions stopped. Crazy.
I gave birth to a 5 lb preemie girl. She was fine, she just had trouble gaining weight.
Enjoy your baby!

i had the exact opposite! for my first pregnancy, my water broke at 8 pm and i started having contractions right away, i had my husband take me to the hospital, by the time we got there at 8:30 i was already dilated to 8 cm, and she was crowning! i did not have time for any pain medication or anything, my daughter was born at 10 pm that night, so only an hour an a half! i will see what happens this pregnancy. congrats on your little man! :)

My labor was induced at 6 in the morning, by 5 pm I was at 5 cm...they upped the pitocin and gave me an epidural, I started pushing at 9 pm, they thought my son was upside down so they had me pushing on my hands and knees to flip him around. The threatened a c-section because he would NOT turn over, until finally they realized my son wasn't upside down, just HUGE! My son was born at 4:44am, 9lbs 7oz, 21 1/2 inches long.
My baby is now 18 months and I wouldn't have traded a moment of it for the world.
