32/2=16

Deduct the 9 cds extra which Paul sold, to leave 32.
Divide that 32 between Paul an John. That's 16 each.
Add the 9 on to Paul's share.
John sold 16, Paul sold 25.

Paul= x+9

So

x+x+9 = 41
2x+9= 41
2x= 41-9
2x = 32
x = 32/2
x = 16
John sold 16 , and Paul sold 25

X = number of cd's john sold X + 9 = number of cd's paul sold.......X + X + 9 = 41..... X = 16 john sold 16....paul sold 25

substitute

2j + 9 = 41
