It could have been prevented, if they had some sort of regulation, but then again when the revenge is strong they will find a way to get their own way, its just a shame that nothing could be done in time

Blame the cops, so far what has been leaked to the media is that the cops didn't lockdown the campus. If a student/teacher had been armed the shooter would have done less damage. However, I don't think it could have been totally prevented, it is way too easy to walk onto a college campus and most don't have metal detectors or armed security.

If you set up barriers to prevent something....people will just find a way around it. The problem is bigger, deeper, and harder to fix than that.....unfortunately.

It is a sad, sad day when parents have to worry about sending their children to college. Va.Tech probably could have reacted quicker....but who's to say?? We won't' know what happened, really, for days if not weeks.

Looking for blame doesn't solve the problem....it just increases the amount of anger out there. And isn't the amount of anger already too high??

I just feel bad for all those parents who got told their child died....

If you watch the news right now, you will hear that it was the police department's decision not to shut the school down. They thought that it was an isolated shooting and that the shooter had left the building and probably left the state. Straight from the Blacksburg, VA police department spokesman as of 1 minute ago.

I think it could have been prevented by gun ownership being socially acceptable and carrying weapons common.

Remember the guy on the NYC subway years ago that started shooting people? He reloaded THREE TIMES.

That wouldn't be possible in an armed society.

absolutely not...we blame the idiot who shot everyone but the topic of school security is an interesting one. i'm glad i'm not in school anymore. something needs to be done. some schools are turning to an emerging technology using biometrics which are intrinsic physical characteristics such as fingerprints, facial features, irises, retinas, voice recognition, and many more. here's an interesting article about how biometric technology is being used in schools.

Absolutely it could have been prevented. The unarmed students were sitting ducks. If people had weapons on them they would have been able to cut the SOB short on his rampage. It just shows you the police are useless in these situations.
