This maybe a silly question, but during the taping of shows like The tonight show, what exactly happens in the studio during commercial breaks?

First I thought they just say "we are taking a break" and then resume with the show, as it is not live; but sometimes they say things like "we were talking about this&that during the break".

So what exactly happens during the commercial breaks?

They don't insert commercials while they are taping the shows. They may take breaks to reset a scene, or eat a meal, but the space for commercials is inserted into the tapes during post-production editing.

National commercials and spaces for local commercials are inserted before the tapes are broadcast to the local television stations. The local television stations then insert their own local commercials into the blank spaces before they broadcast the shows to the local viewers.

Some comedy shows have a comic come out to keep the crowd going. On the night time talk shows music plays. others the producers talk to the audience about what is going on

I suppose that the audience can have an intermission, like being able to talk to the people, going somewhere, etc. and they have to be back by the time that the commercial's over

It's a really stupid theory, isn't it?

each so often they're going to play song to no longer make it so uncomfortable for the target market. Or the host will confer with the target market. On Dr. Phil each so often the travellers confer with him in the course of the commercial... and after the classified ads he mentions that they were saying issues. and what they suggested

They probably get up and stretch, take a nibble or a sippy-sip of a snack, and when the "APPLAUSE" sign comes back on it's time to work.
