There is a 99.9% chance this is a scam. Check with the bank that the check was issued from, or go to fdic.gov. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation maintains a list of common bank check scams. As a Property Crimes Detective, I have used the FDIC several times in the past to check out these checks, and I have almost always found that they were fraudulent. Another giveaway is, if in the correspondence that you received with the check, the author asks for a portion of the check back, or to send a portion of the check to another location. Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions regarding this matter.

If you actually received a check, destroy it right away. This is a common scam. What happens is people deposit into their checking account and believe they have money. When it is spent, then the bank notifies you that the check did not clear. Is there mention of a Canadian lottery winning? I received that one. If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Good that you are alert.

Did you enter the lottery? No, probably scam. There is a noticeable difference with a proper Yahoo! email, and a scam - the ! Official Yahoo emails always have the exclamation mark.

first of all.. it probably is a scam... you you already know that (deep down inside).. anyway research the company name that sent you the letter on the Internet. I would search for the name of the company and SCAM (so if you got the letter from APEX COMPANY, Yahoo search for APEX COMPANY SCAM). Also:

call the bank it was sent from, tell them you would like to verify the check before you cash it. Give them the routing number account number, and check number. with amount. They should be able to answer that for you.

If you have to supply bank account numbers, pay for anything, or apply for anything, then it's a scam. Hope it's not :)
