i know there are buses and shuttles to get to and from areas near the campus, but if you go to school out of state how can they expect you to drive home?

Many people take cheap airplane flights that leave at odd times, sometimes trains, some even rent cars. trust me there is always a way to get somewhere without a car.

Most people who live on campus at a college don't have cars.

There are lots of ways for people to get home when they live out of state -- including trains, planes and busses.

Talk to some friends from your high school who are already in college about what they do.

If you live far enough away from home, you can take a plane.
If you live closer, a train or a bus.
If that isn't an option, you can usually find an upperclassman with a car to take you home for most school breaks.
A car is definitely not a necessity for college life.

You take your bike and ride a lot. Most students only go home at xmas or summer, but for the most part everyone hangs out.

Lots of times people will post notes in the library or other community board for riders. People with cars that are going home for a weekend or whatever will look for riders to help pay for gas costs. look for something like that when you get to school.

They don't. There will be shuttles to the nearest city with an airport and/or train station. Aside from concerns about congestion and parking, some schools are worried about liability if you get in an accident driving home. They would rather put you in the hands of a trained professional to convey you to your residence.

I walk everywhere, but, luckily I live in a relatively small city, so that might not be an option for most people...

and, my Dad lives in Germany, so I never go there, and Id rather not visit my mother as much as possible, so that's not a problem either...

sorry I couldn't be any ACTUAL help :(:( my situations a lot different than most...

Most people don't go home very often. I went to college three hours from my home, and I only went home at xmas. Most of my friends did the same, some couldn't even leave then (international students who have to pay upwards of 2k to go home).

Unless you're attending a local college, no one goes home every weekend. You weren't even allowed to have a car on my college campus.

Well, if you live far enough away, you need a plane. You cannot expect to go from Iowa to Massachusetts in 1 day, you need a plane flight for that. If it's Indiana and Illinois, you could maybe get a carpool with a friend.

I'm a professor and I don't have a car. I've managed to make it through life quite successfully without one thank you and have the slight satisfaction of knowing I'm causing less harm to the environment.
