Do both! There'll be more choice for your guests, especially if they live somewhere where there isn't one store or the other. Babies R' Us has more things, but Target carries certain things that BRU doesn't. (Like for me, I decorated my son's room with Classic Winnie the Pooh stuff, which is only available at Target because they have the rights to it.)

I would register for the "big ticket" items like a swing, car seat, play yard, high chair, infant carrier, and stroller at BabiesRUs. They have a much better selection of these items, and if people don't have one near their house, they can order online and ship to you.
Then, I'd register at Target for the smaller stuff, like sheets, crib bedding, clothes, supplies, etc. It's less expensive, and *everyone* has a Target nearby. Target will let you return a certain number of things without a receipt, then a few more things using your registry (if you register there, they understand you're probably going to want to exchange a couple of duplicates, or things you didn't register for, etc. so they will let you print your registry )
What I wouldn't do, is register for everything at both stores. You will just get duplicates, and you set yourself up to have to run around returning/exchanging for sure (you will probably have to do this a little no matter what.)
Wherever you decide to register, I just have one more tip - don't register for everything in sight (although it's tempting!!) You won't get all that stuff anyway, and people will be overwhelmed by you registry if it's 5 pages. I would really keep it to 2 pages. Enjoy registering, it's lots of fun, and congratulations!

You should register at Wal-Mart because that have a large selection of Winnie The Pooh items (since I got all my baby items there). I would register at Target, Wal-Mart and Babies"R" Us since you might find something that you want or need at all of them. There is nothing wrong with having a variety of stores to go to for when it is time for your baby shower.

I registered at both and I got more off of my target registry than my babies r us. In fact I think I only got 2 things off of my babies r us registry, and my target registery was wiped out!! If you have any out of towners that want to send a gift Target seems to be the most convenient for them, and some towns don't have a babies r us. I think it is just easier for some people to go to Target.

I found it much easier to return things at Babies R Us even without a receipt. You could register at both, especially for people who don't live near one or the other. They both have different stuff- I suggest doing a walk-through of each store before registering. That way you know what each store has and what you'd like better.

Register at both. For those items that are exactly the same but priced differently, register at the cheaper store.
