Who, and why? Did they influence the guitar world today with their style, or do they just shred like monsters? Personally, I would say Jimi Hendrix because without him there would be no Van Halen, Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Slash, Eric Johnson etc.

I think that Jimi Hendrix is INCREDIBLE too, and I agree with what you say about him opening the way for modern, great guitarists. But that does not automatically make him the best guitarist. I say Steve Vai hands down. Although Eddie Van Halen, Ywengie Malmsteen, and Terry McAlpine are also out of this world. My favorite guitarist however is probably Eric Johnston or Neal Schon. I know they are not as "good" but I can only handle the extreme guitar licks for so long and then I need a little break. I can listen to Schon for hours and though he is incredible, he is easy listening due to the fact that he is a "tone bone" as we refer to them in the guitar world. Cool question by the way.

I would say hendrix is one of the best. there are so many different genres that there cant be just one great guitar player there are many. they all have different styles and techniques that make them great. check out eric clapton, wes montgomery, steve vai, dimebag, randy rhoads, frank marino, al di meola, allan holdsworth, uli jon roth, michael schenker, etc. playing guitar is not a sport or competition its about the love of music and expressing yourself and thats the beauty of it
